CNN —The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on Friday said that Republic Bank has been closed by Pennsylvania state regulators, in what the FDIC said was the first US bank failure this year. “Philadelphia-based Republic First Bank (doing business as Republic Bank) was closed today by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC entered into an agreement with Fulton Bank, National Association of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to assume substantially all of the deposits and purchase substantially all of the assets of Republic Bank,” the FDIC said in a statement. That makes Republic Bank (FRBK) far smaller than the regional bank failures that rocked the financial world last year. The FDIC said that Republic Bank was the first bank to fail in the United States since Citizens Bank in Sac City, Iowa, in November 2023.

"From our experience, the brokered CD market is more competitive," said Richard Carter, vice president of fixed income products and services at Fidelity. Like traditional CDs, brokered CDs are offered in different maturities. For instance, JPMorgan's one-year CD, with its 5.4% yield, can be called as early as Oct. 30, according to Fidelity's website. With a brokered CD, you'll have to sell it on the secondary market — and you may lose some of your principal. Depending on your time frame, you may consider a one-year ladder with CD maturities three months apart, a two-year ladder with CD maturities six months apart, or a five-year ladder, with maturities one year apart, he said.

Regional bank earnings may expose critical weaknesses, according to Sheila Bair, former chair of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.Their quarterly numbers begin hitting Wall Street this week. Bank of America on Tuesday reported first-quarter earnings that topped analysts' estimates for profit and revenue on better-than-expected interest income and investment banking. Revenue slipped 1.6% to $25.98 billion as net interest income declined from a year earlier. That's one of the key questions after JPMorgan Chase , Citigroup and Goldman Sachs all topped estimates with help from trading and investment banking. Bank of America's Chief Financial Officer, Alastair Borthwick, told analysts last month to expect investment banking revenue to rise by 10% to 15% from a year earlier, and for trading results to be roughly flat. Analysts will also be focused on the bank's net interest income, which has been declining in recent quarters as funding costs have climbed along with the rise in interest rates.

Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. In addition, the bank's net interest margin came up short, and therefore net interest income. However, bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, a factor Wells can't control. Net interest income fell 17% year over year as deposits declined due to customers reallocating cash into higher-yielding securities. Non-interest income increased 9% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Club holding Wells Fargo will post quarterly results on Friday, followed by our other financial holding, Morgan Stanley, on Tuesday. In theory, higher borrowing costs mean Wells Fargo can generate more money from those interest-earning assets, but it's not that simple. It's hard to say with the fluid inflation and rate expectations whether Wells Fargo might change its NII outlook when it reports on Friday. Wells Fargo also has a key long-term growth prospect in the potential removal of its $1.9 trillion Fed-imposed asset cap. A woman walks past Wells Fargo bank in New York City, U.S., March 17, 2020.

Between "cash stuffing," the "100 envelope" method or the "no-spend" challenge, there's no shortage of suggestions to better your financial standing. How these savings challenges work'Walk before you run'"I would definitely stress walking before you run," Rossman said. Rossman advises having money regularly transferred from your paycheck to a savings account. After a series of interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, some top-yielding online savings account rates are now paying even more than 5%, according to Bankrate.com — well above the rate of inflation. For example, if you have $5,000 in a high-yield savings account earning 5%, you'll make roughly $250 in interest in a year.

The Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation, or FDIC, implemented new requirements for deposit insurance for trust accounts starting April 1. FDIC insurance generally covers $250,000 per depositor, per bank, in each account ownership category. How FDIC coverage of trust accounts has changedUnder the new rules, trust deposits are now limited to $1.25 million in FDIC coverage per trust owner per insured depository institution. Each beneficiary of the trust may have a $250,000 insurance limit for up to five beneficiaries. However, if there are more than five beneficiaries, the FDIC coverage limit for the trust account remains $1.25 million.

However, that won’t happen if you just let it sit in a traditional checking or savings account that yields next to nothing. High-yield online savings accountsThe average annual percentage yield on bank savings accounts was just 0.52% as of March 13, according to Bankrate. As with any bank savings rate, high-yield savings account rates can change overnight, and the bank may not alert you when it lowers it. But don’t confuse money market accounts with money market mutual funds, which invest in short-term, low-risk debt instruments. Unlike money market deposit accounts, money market mutual funds are not insured by the FDIC.

It's one of the silver linings to the current rate environment, said Ted Rossman, chief credit card analyst at Bankrate. Credit cardsThe flip side to the positive environment for savers is the expensive credit card market: Consumers carrying balances on their cards face historically high rates. "The Fed is not going to come to your rescue on credit card rates," Rossman said. The Fed is not going to come to your rescue on credit card rates. That's not to say predictions of a commercial real estate rebound are a sure bet. Here are four signs that support Gray's prediction that the commercial real estate market may be bottoming. (New York Community Bank had previously purchased $2.7 billion in Signature's loans and deposits, but not the real estate loans.) According to David Seifert, partner at private equity real estate firm Velocis, there are some sweet deals to be had in secondary sales of private-equity funds tied to real estate. The road aheadWhere Gray sees signs of bottoming, others think commercial real estate has much further to fall.

From 1985 to 2002, he worked at Goldman Sachs, one of the most storied — and criticized — investment banks on Wall Street. He famously swooped in to turn around the struggling IndyMac bank after its failure in the financial crisis of 2008. Earlier this month, Mnuchin jumped back into the headlines when his PE firm led a roughly $1 billion investment in embattled New York Community Bancorp. In 2009, OneWest Bank Group, where Mnuchin was chairman and CEO, bought the troubled IndyMac after federal regulators took over the bank. Mnuchin was Treasury secretary in 2020, when the Trump administration brokered a deal where Oracle and Walmart would take a large stake in TikTok.
